 Music Service Training Programme 

Teaching Music for students of

Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus School

Background

          With the request of Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus School, a vocational school equivalent to a high school level offering a commercial program, and the need survey carried out with the students during its first visit, ABAC School of Music at the beginning of 2012 academic year has organized a music training programme for the Holy Infant Jesus’ students, who wanted to learn and improve their musical knowledge, abilities, and skills in playing musical instruments of their interest, and use their free-time after the school hours productively.  

Programme Structure

          ABAC School of Music’s programme comprised 6 intensive, once-a-week, 2-hour training sessions on Friday after 2.30 pm. encompassing 4 musical instruments – Vocal, Keyboard, Guitar and Violin, according to the students’ interest.  Since the training was intensive, in order to ensure the programme’ effectiveness, the training was conducted in a small group, not more than 7 students per group, except for a keyboard lesson which was taught on a one-to-one basis as the School has only one keyboard.  The contents of the training programme were developed by the lecturer of ABAC School of Music, and the trainings were carried out by the selected outstanding and experienced School of Music students.   

Objectives for learners at Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus School to achieve

         The objectives of the training for Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus School students compose of short, medium and long terms.

  • The short term objective, with duration of 1 to 2 semesters, focuses on providing a basic training to help students obtain basic skills needed for playing selected basic pop or classical pieces.
  • The medium term objective, with duration of 3 to 4 semesters and weekly classes and continuous practices on the assigned lessons, aims to enhance students’ music instrument skills to the level allowing them to form a band or an ensemble, design the program, style of songs, and perform in front of the public.
  • The long term objective, with duration of 5 to 6 semesters, and intensive practices, aims to help students master their musical skills to the extent where they are able to transfer their musical knowledge and teach junior friends to play basic pop or classical pieces systematically and effectively.  Consequently, students attending the training to this level have alternative choice of becoming music instructors at private music institutes, which are rapidly growing and hence need to recruit new teachers to serve rising demand for music lessons of children and teenagers.

Objective for ABAC School of Music Students to achieve

          ABAC School of Music Students who have been selected to participate in teaching at Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus School were mostly third and fourth year students, many of whom have already had years of experience teaching musical instruments as part-time music teachers.  As such, not only this training program serves as a platform for lecturers and students to render academic service to the needed community, it also becomes a practicum for them to acquire invaluable experience of working as a team, conducting lessons for learners with different levels of abilities, and dealing with teenage learners.

Outcome at the end of first year training

          The School of Music lecturers and students have had a high level of involvement with the programme.  Most of the students, based on the focus grouped survey at the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus School on the first visit, had a very low musical knowledge and instrumental abilities at the beginning of the programme.  On the basis of the designed training programme, the students have studied basic postures and foundation techniques on instruments in the first year.  The voice students have learnt how to release sound and diction technique to ensure a proper pitch sound.  Students choosing a guitar instrument have learnt the basic chords and different forms of the left hand when putting their fingers on the fingerboard.  Students focusing on a violin instrument have learnt basic postures of left and right hands, the proper position of violin on the left shoulder,  including the bowing techniques and note-reading.  The piano student, with good basic background and techniques before attending the training programme, was able to improve the skills quickly based on the tutor provided advices and advanced lessons.  

Further development

          As some of our dedicated tutors have graduated and have a full time job, the School needs to identify and train volunteer music students to replace those graduates, and simultaneously support the increasing number of participating students at Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus School who will be interested in participating in the training programme in the following academic year.  As such, prior to the resumption of its second year training programme at the Convent of Holy Infant Jesus School, the School of Music foresees the necessity of setting a short training course on basic teaching and learning technique for the volunteer music students so as to enable them to deliver the designed training lessons effectively.

          In addition, with the focus of previous year’s training programme on the acoustic musical instruments, and as the training program embarks on the second stage where participants of the training programme are expected to form a band or an ensemble, the School of Music needs to prepare a series of lesson that would introduce to the participants techniques of playing electric musical instruments and encourage them to practice the instruments together.
